Felixa’s Miracle: Lost for Two Years, Found by Fate

During the COVID lockdown in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote, Tony and I (Lana) became volunteer cat feeders, making daily rounds to care for the island’s feral cat colonies. One of our regular stops was the car park near the Princesa Yaiza hotel—home to a small group of cats who had come to rely on us.
Among them was a striking black cat with white markings and delicate white paws. We called her Felixa.
Felixa stood out—not just for her looks, but for her gentle, social nature. She was always there to greet us with a little meow, happily accepting food, treats, and affection. She often appeared alongside her feline companions, Doro and Dana, and quickly became one of the cats we looked forward to seeing most.

Then one day… she didn’t come when we called.
By then, lockdown restrictions had eased, and people were starting to return to normal life. We searched the area and eventually spotted her—but she wasn’t alone. She was hovering near a woman, acting strangely—sometimes friendly, sometimes hissing and unsettled. It was behaviour we’d never seen from her before. We called out several times to her and she didn’t respond to our calls.
We approached, curious and concerned. The woman didn’t speak any English, and our Spanish was very limited—but somehow, between gestures, photos, and shared emotion, we managed to understand each other.
She believed Felixa was Lilo, her beloved cat who had gone missing two years earlier from her home in La Asomada, around 20 miles away.
She told us she had searched tirelessly—putting up posters, asking neighbours, hoping for a miracle. And then she showed us photos… and we were stunned. Same face. Same markings. Same white socks. It was her.
Even more astonishing, Felixa—Lilo—seemed to recognise her, too.
We offered to help and encouraged the woman to take Felixa home, to see how she’d react.

That very first night, Lilo curled up beside her long-lost human as if nothing had changed. Within a week, she’d reconnected with her best friend—the family dog—and settled right back into her old life.
The big question was: how did she end up in Playa Blanca?
As it turned out, the woman used to work at the Princesa Yaiza hotel. One day, Lilo must have climbed into or under her car without anyone noticing. When they arrived in Playa Blanca, she likely wandered off and, unable to find her way back, simply stayed where she was. Over time, she became part of the local cat colony—and part of our daily lives.
So while she was lost, she was never truly forgotten. And against all odds, she found her way home.
Now Lilo is safe, spoiled, and living the indoor life she deserves. No more car parks. No more scavenging. Just love, snuggles, and soft cushions.
We still smile when we think of her. Stories like this are the reason we do what we do.
